Suzy Bogguss is by far and away my favorite female
country music artist, so I suppose it is with a small degree of prejudice
that I state that Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt is a fantastic
album. Yet even without a predisposition to being attracted to Suzy's
music, Nobody Love..., scores high marks as a testament to
an artist whose career is based on quality and not quantity.
In Music City the name 'Suzy Bogguss' is always recieved
with equal parts of warmth, admiration and respect. To put it another
way- 'you just ain't nobody till you're name appears in the liner
notes and credits of a Suzy Bogguss album' and with Nobody Love...,
you can add the name Garth to the small fraternity of Suzy Bogguss
album alumni.
"Take Me Back" is the vehicle that adds Garth's background
vocals to compliment Suzy's distinctive styling. "In my mind I heard
Garth singing the background vocals," Suzy relates, "but I really
had no clue how it would be, we had never sung together before." Nevertheless
Garth showed up with a cold and "I told him to go ahead and give it
a shot anyway, ... He just wailed away... it was all done in a matter
of minutes."
Several other Bogguss compadres lent a hand with vocal duties
including Patty Loveless on "I Surrender," Kathy Mattea on "When I
Run," and Alison Krauss and Trisha Yearwood on "Train Of Thought."
Suzy's husband Doug Crider again contributes his songwriting
skills to this, Suzy's eighth album (not counting her Greatest Hits
Album), but for the first time his name appears as a co-producer (along
with Suzy).
Bogguss fans will recognize a number of names in the songwriters
credits. Beside Suzy herself and husband Doug, other songwriters whose
songs have previously appeared on Suzy's albums include Tony Arata
("Part Of Me"), Cheryl Wheeler ("Aces"), and Matraca Berg ("Hey Cinderella").
The Bobbie Cryner penned title cut stands out above the other
cuts with its 'slice-of-life detailing of a convenience store robbery'
that you've just got to hear for yourself.
You know, whien I was a child it felt like forever between
Christmas' and now that I'm older I get that same feeling waiting
for the next Suzy Bogguss album to be released. Thankfully for Bogguss
fans Christmas is here!
