Suzy Bogguss Suzy Bogguss Platinum Records |
This latest album from Suzy is a dynamic exercise that embodies the wonderful vocals of the best female singer in Nashville today. This self-titled album has been much anticipated as it is the product of Suzy's first recording under her new label, Platinum Records. Once again Suzy joins with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider to produce a technically flawless album. Each song on the album is a powerful vocal testament for Suzy. The only downfall for the album as a whole is in it's failure to "stretch the envelope." Suzy has evidently left behind the resonating neo-traditional sound she implemented on her early albums, instead foraging ahead with songwriting that reflects the current trends in Nashville - technically perfect and politically safe, gone is the adventurous and exploratory sound found on her early albums. Be that as it may, I would still recommend this self-titled album to any fan of good music. The Tony Arata penned "Love Every Time" stands out from the other cuts with its jazzy-blues feel. Alison Krauss joins Harry Stinson for background vocal duty on the Bogguss/Gary Scruggs tune "Hammer And Nail," a tune that intones the folk era of the 60's. T. Graham Brown teams up with Suzy on "Love Is Blind," a Doug Crider tune, with what is my favorite line from the entire album - "Kiss me now, I read lips." Brown's raspy vocals is a sharp contrast to Suzy's enchanting style, but the two voices together become a passionate blend of sound. With 12 cuts on this album, Suzy has given us a bit bigger of a treat with which to whet our appetites while we eagerly look forward to her next album. -Charlton Wiggins |
