His voice has come to be regarded as one of the best examples of
pure country music and with each successive album, Mark Chesnutt rewrites
the standard by which traditional country music is measured.
With Wings, his latest Decca Records effort, the east Texas
native once again showcases both his voice and his uncanny knack for
picking the right songs to show off his infectious voice.
Wings is a delight for lovers of the honky tonk sound. "Trouble,"
"The King of Broken Hearts," and "As The Honky Tonk Turns" are dripping
with barroom beer and stale cigarette smoke. Other tunes on Wings
echo the past sound of country music on an AM radio while cruising
down a country road. "(I Think) I've Finally Broken Mine" and "I May
Be A Fool" bring to mind the sounds of another Texas singer: Glen
Campbell.
Wings is a milestone for Chesnutt with it's maturity in style,
lyrics, vocals and those beautiful steel guitar strains.
